In the December 2014 issue of the Australian Home Beautiful Magazine, the home of Channel 7, Better Homes & Garden's Tara Dennis was showcased.  It really captured my attention for it beautiful coastal style & lots of coastal vintage goodness. Tara's home is new, built by her husband Martyn and decorated by Tara. Inspiration was taken from the nearby river shacks and oyster farms creating a home that blends seamlessly into the rugged environment. Tara states that she wanted it to feel like an older style home, like an old weekender. They used recycled materials and timber to create charm and authenticity. Tara's says she doesn't do modern very well. She likes second-hand furniture, things with character and that have a story. Cleaning Clam Shells

I'm often asked via social media or email how do I clean old clam shells?  So this is a quick post on how I've managed to do it with the ones that I found last year that had been sitting in a shed for over 20-years. Before photo. Absolutely filthy isn't it? I love the barnacles on this one. And another one. Not so bad. I did a little research online but there were some techniques that seemed quite harsh. Such as using hydrochloric acid or blasting with a water gurney. I was too nervous about going down either of those routes as I didn't want to damage any part of the shells including all the lovely barnacles.  So I came to the conclusion that the least invasive way was to simply use bleach and water.  I was a bit hesitant at first to use too much bleach but it didn't seem to work. So I learnt not to be  shy with the bleach!  Fill a container up of 50% water & 50% bleach if the shells are particularly dirty, making sure tha

Wooden Lobster Pot Buoys

Well here is a little history.  Wooden lobster pot buoys are a  type of float that is attached to a cane pot/trap in order for lobstermen to be able to identify their traps which have been set on the ocean floor. The buoy is attached to the trap and it floats on top of the water enabling the lobstermen to locate his pot/s easily.  To identify their buoys the lobstermen have their own colour scheme. This is required by law and many mark their buoys with their initials or names, and also license numbers.
